Rebecca Soni has the
second-fastest time by an American woman in the 200-yard
breaststroke....
Mark Schubert, the coach who
had recruited her from the Scarlet Aquatic Club in New
Jersey, left USC in the spring of 2006 to become the
national team’s director. His replacement, Dave Salo, has a
different training philosophy, favoring high-intensity,
low-mileage workouts over the high-mileage regimen that
Schubert followed and that Soni had grown up with.
While coaching a club in
Irvine, Calif., Salo had developed
Amanda
Beard, the breaststroker who has won
medals in three Olympics. Soni was not impressed and
considered transferring. “But I didn’t know where to go,”
she said. “One day I’d be like, I have to leave. The next
day I was like, but I love the school.”

Horton hears a WHO! |
03/19/08
WALL movie night will be Friday,
March 19 at 6:30PM. We will be watching Dr. Seuss',
Horton hears a Who!
Parents are more than welcome to attend or drop their
swimmers off and pick them up around 8:15PM. We will
all sit together and make sure you include enough money for
Popcorn! We will be cancelling practice Friday evening
at the YMCA so the "swim taxi" isn't working over time!
HOPE TO SEE
YOU THERE! |

Burmood takes GOLD and
qualifies for Sectionals! |
03/17/08
Walla Walla Swim Club competed
in the Northwest Age Group Sectional Meet last weekend in
Federal Way, WA and posted some great efforts and gave the
swimmer's invaluable learning/racing experiences. One
such race was the women's 15-18 200 Fly where Erica Burmood
decided it was time to take it and run! After posting
a LTB (Life Time Best) in Prelims and entering finals as 1st
seed, she decided to come back and lower the prelim time by
1.27 seconds, win the Gold medal (placing first) and grab
her first of many Senior Sectionals cuts!
Congratulations Erica and all WALL swimmers who attended!

Sticking With Swimming….What Can a Parent Do?
03/17/08
The Unfortunate Path that Many Swimmers Follow:
The swimmer’s career often starts with 8/under success and
high parental enthusiasm. The child is encouraged by parents
and others to excel and a big deal is made out of
every
accomplishment. As the child changes age groups and moves
into the 9/10 group, even the most successful child may
struggle because he or she has a harder time finding success
against 10 year olds. What successes are achieved may not be
as noticeable. Unfortunately, as many as one-third of the
young swimmers and their families do not make it past this
point.

TOTAL SUCCESS
with Dinner/Auction! |
03/02/08
1ST ANNUAL TOTALLY OFF
THE BLOCKS DINNER/AUCTION - The evening was a huge
success - there were 76 in attendance, dinners were
enjoyed and the auction was crazy - 11 silent items,
5 live items! Our best guess at this point is
a net profit of $5,500! Thank you to all who
participated, donated and enjoyed a great evening at
the Backstage Bistro.
A very
special THANK YOU to Nanci, Kay and Marjie for
starting, putting on and pulling off such a
spectacular event that will hopefully be one of the
year's most anticipated evenings!
